Debt Counseling

from:

Many people turn to debt counseling when they feel they can no longer manage paying their bills and they’re looking for a solution without having to resort to bankruptcy. Debt counseling agencies are widely advertised yet they can be quite different when it comes to the services they offer and fees they may charge.

While debt counseling agencies offer different services, as far as negotiating with your creditors and beginning a payment plan this is something you can do yourself just as well as any agency can. You can negotiate with your creditors and start a repayment plan without having to consult with a debt counselor. However, if you are truly in need of debt counseling then it will be worth your while to pursue this with a debt counseling agency.

You want to ask questions as far as what services the agency offers and what, if any, fees are charged. Even non-profit debt counseling agencies sometimes charge fees so don’t let those words throw you. You also don’t want your reduced payments reduced even further by having to pay hefty fees.

Don’t get snowed by anyone promising to repair your credit. You’re the only one that can do this and it takes time and hard work. No one can make bad credit entries on your credit report disappear overnight.

Spend your time and resources with a legitimate debt counseling agency by making sure the agency is a member of the National Foundation of Credit Counseling (NFCC). This will help ensure that you are dealing with a legitimate organization. Be honest with yourself and with the debt counselor as you explain your situation. After all, the main idea here is to turn your financial life around.
