What exactly is Debt Counseling?
from:Surprisingly, many individuals have heard of debt counseling but they are not really sure what debt counseling is or what the process involves. Unfortunately, people that have accrued a significant amount of debt often make hasty decisions in their attempts to end the embarrassing phone calls from debt collectors and to alleviate the mounting pressure of being in debt. Looking for fast and simple solutions, many individuals either opt to file for bankruptcy or they apply for consolidation loans in their efforts to minimize their debt; such options may alleviate debt temporarily, but seldom have long term benefits.
That's where debt counseling comes into play: debt counseling can help individuals manage their current debt. A professional counselor works hand-in-hand with an individual so that they can create a repayment plan. The repayment plan is then enacted: each creditor that is owed money is paid a small percentage of the amount of the debt that is owed over a preplanned period of time. Further, debt counseling includes additional services: a certified counselor will educate the client on how to successfully manage debt in the future as well as how to establish a reasonable budget.
On the whole, debt counseling is an alternative solution to the more radical financial debt solutions available. Rather than simply helping the client clear way existing debt, debt counselor’s help individuals make life changing habits to improve their existing financial position, as well as teach them how to maintain their financial stability in the future.
